Children's Specialists Division of Infectious Disease assists the practitioner in the management of serious, complicated or unusual infections in children, and are able to assume primary responsibility for evaluation and monitoring of children while on therapy. The Infectious Disease Division includes:
infectious disease diagnosis, management, and prevention
inpatient and outpatient consultation
specialized lab testing and interpretation of results to maximize the laboratory's role in infectious disease diagnosis
laboratory research in infectious disease of children, and clinical research including new antibiotic and antiviral therapy as well as investigational treatment with immune modulators
The Infectious Diseases Division is also an integral part of the teaching program for UCSD School of Medicine, with the participation of medical students, pediatric residents, and pediatric infectious diseases fellows.
Pediatric Infectious Disease clinics meet weekly for new patient evaluations and follow-up visits of children seen previously in the hospital or the clinic. Practitioners wishing to refer children with urgent, problematic infections may do so any day of the week.
